The Oklahoma City Barons, in just their second season in the American Hockey League, are West Division champions. The Barons clinched the title Sunday, without playing, when the San Antonio Rampage lost 1-0 to the Peoria Rivermen. Oklahoma City (42-19-9) now focuses on winning the Western Conference's top seed, which would earn home-ice advantage throughout the conference portion of the playoffs.

The Barons have a really good team this year but due to the NBA lockout, most of their games this year have gone head to head with the Thunder and that has hurt them in attendance.

It has been amazing how often they are on the same day. I guess the new schedule really messed up the AHL. I really hope they would try to plan around the Thunder. I did get to one game and have been trying to go back, but they have had hardly any games that weren't on a Thunder night.

It was hard because with the 66 game schedule and AHL Hockey already started to play so they couldn't change the barons hockey game

For much of the season, the Barons led the AHL in points. That changed when Norfolk decided they were done with losing games. On February 5th. Since that night, the Norfolk Admirals have won 23 straight games (an AHL record). Pretty impressive.

If the Barons win the Calder Cup championship trophy, they'll earn it because Norfolk is a machine.

There's a playoff game in OKC Sunday night at 7. Might be fun to go and support a team I haven't paid much attention to, I'm thinking.

I'm going to go, only caught one game this year. The Barons have absolutely dominated the first two. Pretty cheap that the worse team may get an extra home game because they stunk in the series. I guess it is a cost cutting measure for the AHL to only travel once in the opening series.

Looks like Sunday could be the closeout game. I've bought tickets to see this:
Barons take 2-0 lead in playoff series
Ryan Keller scores twice as OKC beats Houston 4-1. Game 3 is Sunday at the Cox Center.

    By Jeremy Rakes
HOUSTON — After using a three-goal second period to blow by Houston in Game 1, Oklahoma City expected the Aeros to put up more of a fight in Game 2.
For one period at least, Houston did just that, but with two second-period goals, and a comeback crushing short-handed goal in the third, the Barons picked up a 4-1 win over the Aeros on Friday at Toyota Center in front of a crowd of 4,756.

Oklahoma City now has a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five AHL Western Conference first-round playoff series. The Barons will go for the sweep in Game 3 at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Cox Center.

The Redhawks also have a game Sunday afternoon and they're off to a good start. I'm thinking about the going to the Barons game after the Redhawks game.

It's a weird quirk in the AHL playoff scheduling, but the league actually gives the higher seeded team the choice of playing a traditional 2-2-1 format or letting the lower seeded team host the first two games and then having the last three at home (games 4 & 5 if necessary, of course). A few higher seeded teams chose to start out on the road, and for the Barons it couldn't have worked out better. It does stink for the OKC fans that they may only see one home game in the first round, but it's their own team that chose for it to be that way.

The Barons will begin 2nd round play next Thursday (May 3rd) at 7:00 pm. It's also dollar beer night at the Myriad so I'll be going down that night. Just hope more people will show up and support the team.
