The New Orleans Hornets have responded to their 3-6 start by making the first coaching change of the young NBA season, firing Byron Scott on Thursday, according to NBA coaching sources.

Sources said the Hornets made the decision to dismiss Scott following New Orleans' 124-104 loss in Phoenix on Wednesday night and will formally announce the move later Thursday.

It was not immediately known who the Hornets will select to replace Scott for the rest of the season.

i wouldn't be surprised to see him end up as an assistant in LA until Phil retires.

Evidently, he lost the team .......... allowing 75 pts in the first half is just a total breakdown of effort. It does not take an NBA afficionado to figure that out. No effort is a reflection on the coach.

He was a lame duck anyway. As a coach, he's a grinder, he probably wears on players after a while. I figure as long as he had DWest and CP in his corner, then he would be OK. Evidently not.

Wow, I'm a bit surprised. It will be interesting to see who they replace him with. Although he may need to assume part of the blame for the start of this season, I think player personnel was a big part of the problem. I'm a little surprised Jeff Bower didn't end up going with him.

The reason they didn't fire Jeff Bower is because that is their new interim head coach. They've also hired Tim Floyd to be his top assistant. Haven't they already tried Tim Floyd at coach before? I guess Shinn is now using the Timberwolves and Grizzlies formula for team building. Fire the coach and use the lame duck GM as the interim coach. Hire a former coach as an assistant to then hire him as head coach when the lame duck GM/coach gets fired. I have one word for the Hornets........TITANIC!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree Betts, Bowers move of signing Mo-Pete, Peja, and James Posey are what have put the franchise in the financial problem that they are in. Now in his defense the trade of Chandler for Okafor was genius.

And even that is somewhat questionable since Chandler was a great locker room guy who had good chemistry with CP3. Okafor is good but just doesn't mesh with this unit.

Floyd was a disaster in the 2nd half of his one season with the Hornets. Teams adjusted to the Hornets while he made zero adjustments to them. I hope he isn't the one being groomed for their long term job but why else would they bring in someone from the outside just to be an assistant?

Call me spiteful, but I absolutely love this. Scott wasn't the problem -- having zero commitment to bringing in talent was.

Bower should have gone first and he's now the HC -- not even with an interim tag (from what I've seen). AND Tim Floyd? Oh man, I hope they have a horrible season.

Scott will be replaced by general manager Jeff Bower, with Tim Floyd as his top assistant, the team said.

Team owner George Shinn thanked Scott for his service, but said Bower "knows this team better than anyone" and gives the Hornets "our best opportunity to reach our goals this season."

Really, seriously. This team is so doomed.

In other words, Bower brought these players here, so he can coach em.

Hornet PC on NBA TV at this moment.

I can understand Coach Scott being fired (despite leading his team to many victories in previous seasons) but hiring Jeff Bower as head coach? Surely, they are trying to find someone else in the next few weeks.

Good luck to Coach Scott (who I like a lot) and I bet he ends up way out west (hint, hint) next season.

O.k., you're spiteful. Seriously I don't know why you are happy. I feel back for Byron but it was the right decision because of too many ugly losses late last season and this season so far. Bower as HC is not the solution. I guess I will have to venture over HR.com and see what the 'natives' are saying about this.
