Good question?
I wrote Bill an e-mail some years ago and he did respond to my e-mail; he was very polite. I don't really understand this guy. He has some psychological issues of which I'm not certified to give a diagnosis.

I get the feeling no one read the article, and forgot that he visited OKC this last year and enjoyed his time here.

I remember that when Bill visited OKC to see the "Zombies" play, he got skeered, said he was cursed because he came to see the "Zombies" play. He then apologized to all of Seattledom for coming to...whatever he used for "OKC".

...most of the time, when it comes to the Thunder and OKC.

He makes jokes about everybody...and it's not even "most of the time" about the Thunder. Its occassional. And I'll be honest, I laugh. When listening to his playoff podcast earlier this year, he accidentally said "Thunder" and made a note to go back and bleep it out. I laughed my ass off. Cant get enough of it. It's a running joke. Get over it. Enjoy his writing or don't read it.

He definitely likes the team and players. Hates the owners and that the organization is here and makes fun of OKC (butt of the joke, like Cleveland) nearly every chance he gets because he knows there are a lot of people and colleagues in and from Seattle. If you follow the NBA, you can hardly avoid reading or hearing about BS. He's too prominent to avoid. He writes other interesting, entertaining stuff. Just because I think what I think about Bill doesn't mean I have a small-town, inferiority complex like a lot of people talk about.
That's fine if you laugh at it; there is some humor there, but I just get tired of it. It is a joke, it's just on us. It's a running joke that's gone too long...it loses some punch after the first couple of years.
That's more opinions for, so I guess I could stick my head in the sand and repeat to myself he really is okay with OKC, but then I'd just feel like George McFly with Biff making the jokes at the soda shop. He's cool, he's just making jokes.

But that's the thing...He's already "okay with OKC". I bet if you asked him off the record, he got over it about a week after the team moved. But he saw it as a funny joke and while people outside of OKC have stopped laughing, people within OKC keep complaining, which causes him to keep saying it. He knows how to pick his spots. Jokes on him though, We got Perk and he got JG. I think we all know who's going to win more games in the next 5 years and that's all that matters

He is a COLUMNIST... and his JOB is to generate EMOTION and thus interest/readers/hits....
And judging by this thread alone, it appears he's really good at his job.

Yeah, it's kind of like being offended if you get picked on during SNL or on South Park. It's their whole purpose of existence to make fun of things.
Take it for what it's worth.
How dare he make jokes!
And apparently, how dare we make jokes about him. He can dish it out, but his jock sniffers can't take it.

I don't understand the hate for Bill Simmons. When he first started his Zombies thing, I'll admit that I was pissed. He was basically belittling us for no reason, other than the fact that we used to be the Seattle Sonics and also because its easy to pick on the little guy. He would never pick on Los Angeles for taking the Bills from Buffalo, if that happens to occur in the future.
But, for that same underdog reason, I think I've grown to love the fact that he picks on us for being the little guys. We've literally become the "Screech" of the NBA. If anybody grew up watching Saved by the Bell, you know that Screech was the lovable nerd that was always the underdog, but usually came out on top. Well, that's OKC right now. The loveable underdog that everyone is enamored and intrigued by. The small guy that usually comes out on top.
And do you know what Simmons is? He's the pastor lusting over the hot stripper. Its the thing that Simmons loves to talk out against, but secretly wants. He is enamored by our players. He loves our team structure. Hell, I think he even secretly loves the fanbase. But he can never talk about us in that way because then he is going against everything he has said he believes in about us.
How could you not like a guy that is fighting against himself? Its like he's shadowboxing, but his shadown is wearing a KD jersey.

EXCELLENT post and excellent thoughts, Rican. Thing is, before the Thunder existed, Simmons was among my favorite sports writers. He's incredibly talented, engaging and funny. And none of that has changed. I believe in the "all publicity is good" theory and Simmons gives us a LOT of publicity. I don't get really mad at his "zombie" blasts any more - but I do wish he would just once acknowledge that the reason that the Seattle Sonics don't exist any more has much more to do with what Seattle DIDN'T do than what Clay Bennett did.
